FLINT, Michigan, March 9, 2016 – The Ruth Mott Foundation is naming Kristin Longley, an experienced journalist with a deep knowledge and love of the Flint community, to serve as its director of communications.

Longley will lead the foundation’s communications activities, including media relations and social media strategy, effective March 21. She will also help spread the word about the uplifting work of the foundation’s grantees and help maintain the website.

This is a new position created as part of the foundation’s recently developed strategic plan to help the residents of north Flint build a thriving and sustainable community.

“We are thrilled to bring Kristin aboard during this exciting period of change at the foundation,” said Ruth Mott Foundation President Handy Lindsey. “Her commitment to Flint and her experience with digital and social media will help support the foundation’s mission as we strengthen our grantmaking activities in north Flint.”

Longley brings with her over a decade of media experience, including recently serving as community engagement specialist at The Flint Journal, where she also served as an assistant editor and reporter. She previously worked at the Jackson Citizen-Patriot and The Associated Press in Detroit.

She is a graduate of Michigan State University and lives in Grand Blanc with her husband and two dogs.

“The Ruth Mott Foundation is committed to making a difference in Flint and so am I,” Longley said. “It’s exciting to be a part of an organization that’s focusing its resources in an effort to see real change, and I’m looking forward to carrying the foundation’s inspiring message out in the community.”

The Ruth Mott Foundation currently grants about $6 million annually to help strengthen neighborhoods and create opportunities for residents to thrive in Flint. The foundation recently developed its new 2016-20 strategic plan with the belief that concentrating on a defined area with significant challenges will grow positive change in the community
