Programs
Geographic Focus
Flint, Michigan was the home of C. S. and Ruth Rawlings Mott and is headquarters for the Ruth Mott Foundation. It is therefore fitting that the greater Flint area is the primary interest of the Foundation and the focus of its grant activity. Over time, our grant programs may be expanded beyond Flint.
Applewood
Built in 1916 as a self-sustaining family farm, the Mott residence, known as Applewood, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house and grounds encompass approximately 30 acres, 18 extensively landscaped. The grounds are comprised of perennial, rose and demonstration gardens, a 75-tree orchard with 25 varieties of heritage apples, and a gatehouse that houses the Mott archives.
Applewood, with its special beauty, is a place for inspiration and renewal in the heart of Flint. Recognizing its special responsibility to preserve and share this unique community asset, the Ruth Mott Foundation operates Applewood to demonstrate and support its mission, vision, values and programs. Through convenings, festivals, and community outreach, Applewood with its committed volunteers, lends support to the Foundation’s arts, beautification, health promotion, and civic engagement efforts.
