FLINT, Michigan – The Ruth Mott Foundation Board of Trustees in June 2019 approved $1,365,370 in grant awards that support the revitalization of north Flint.
The 22 awards are:
- Evergreen Community Development Initiative. $150,000 for operating the Flint Development Center, a north Flint neighborhood hub offering a variety of educational, recreation, and youth services to area residents.
- Mott Community College. $126,875 for the Flint and Genesee Literacy Network to lead the continued coordination and facilitation of literacy services for north Flint youth and families, as well as organizational capacity building, data collection, and impact measurement.
- Tapology, Inc. $120,000 for out-of-school-time youth development and employment programs through tap dance for north Flint youth.
- Asbury Community Development Corp. $112,500 for operating a north Flint neighborhood hub offering literacy programs, nutrition lessons, youth programming, job training, water resource services, and community meeting space. The hub is also the site of an expanded urban farm and the Asbury Café, a farm-to-table operation.
- Catholic Charities of Shiawassee & Genesee Counties. $100,000 for the Mr. Gaines Gardening Program PLUS, which provides youth with 16 weeks of job training, employment, and culinary and nutrition lessons.
- Sphinx Organization. $95,000 for the Sphinx Overture: Music Education and Youth Development Program, which provides music learning opportunities and private lessons to north Flint students while helping to build confidence and character and increase academic success.
- GST Michigan Works, Inc. $81,000 for a local out-of-school-time version of the Jobs for America’s Graduates program, providing north Flint young people facing multiple barriers with learning supports, job training, and job shadowing experiences.
- MADE Institute. $77,000 for job training, mentorship, and transitional housing services for north Flint men and women returning from incarceration.
- Local Initiatives Support Corp. $75,000 to provide capacity building and technical assistance to a variety of economic opportunity, housing, and safety initiatives based in north Flint.
- The Flint Institute of Music, Inc. $58,660 for music and dance instruction and live performance opportunities for north Flint families, including the Super Start transition program; Music and Dance for Young Learners program; and youth lessons.
- Crim Fitness Foundation. $49,120 for Safe & Active North Flint, an advocacy and engagement program that promotes safe and walkable communities where children feel safe walking to school and where residents feel supported in their efforts to effect change.
- Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village. $45,000 for News Movement, which provides afterschool and summer journalism-based programs for north Flint youth.
- Michigan Council on Crime and Delinquency. $38,000 for the Nation Outside Flint Chapter to focus on building the civic involvement and leadership of formerly incarcerated residents and to change public policies that reduce stigma and increase opportunities for people with a felony record.
- United Way of Genesee County. $35,475 for STEMLetics, which provides hands-on, afterschool STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning experiences using sports for north Flint youth.
- Center for Higher Educational Achievement. $35,000 for the North Flint Adult Education Program, which delivers intensive reading and math supports to north Flint residents who are: over the age of 25, academically challenged, and interested in completing their High School Diploma or GED and/or pursuing postsecondary education or job training.
- Project SYNcERE, Inc. $35,000 for STEMNETICS, a program that provides elementary and middle school students with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) learning opportunities, and aims to increase academic proficiency in math and science.
- YMCA of Greater Flint. $34,240 for the Shooting for the Stars Summer Engagement Academy, designed to support low-income and working families by offering interactive learning opportunities for youth at no cost during the summer at the Flint Development Center, a north Flint neighborhood hub.
- Re-Connections, Inc. $27,500 for job training, certification, and coaching for people with a felony record.
- Institute of R.H.Y.M.E.S. $25,000 for the Building Men of Excellence program, which provides academic support, cultural activities, enrichment programs, and mentoring to middle and high-school aged boys in north Flint.
- Boy Scouts of America Water & Woods Field Service Council. $20,000 for the Urban Scouting Program, which will provide weekly afterschool academic tutoring and hands-on experiential learning focused on character, leadership development, outdoor skills, and personal fitness to youth at Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village.
- El Ballet Folklórico Estudiantil. $15,000 for weekly Mexican folkloric music and dance programming in English and Spanish for youth at Richfield Public School Academy in north Flint.
- Evergreen Community Development Initiative. $10,000 for Love Marie’s Club, a preschool reading and writing program that builds the literacy skills children will need to be successful in kindergarten and beyond.
